About Augusta, GA

Welcome to Augusta Georgia. Augusta is a city steeped in history founded in 1736 by Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe. It is the second oldest and second largest city in Georgia. Augusta was named in honor of Princess Augusta, the wife of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales. Augusta is home to many historically significant homes and buildings, such as: the Cotton Exchange, established in 1872; boyhood home of Pres. Woodrow Wilson (built in 1859); George Walton Home, signer of the Declaration of Independence (circa 1791 the oldest documented house in Augusta) and The Ezekiel Harris House (1798, listed in the National Register of Historic places).

Augusta and surrounding area is called home by nearly half a million people. They enjoy a growing arts community, fine restaurants, many eclectic shops and several sports events. The most famous being the Masters Golf Tournament, but Augusta is also home to two professional sports teams, the Augusta Lynx of the East Coast Hockey League and the Augusta Green Jackets a minor league (single A) owned by Cal Ripken Jr.

Water recreation is also prominent either on the Savannah River or on Thurmond Lake (or Clark Hill Lake if you're a local). Thurmond Lake is one of the largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River. With approximately 1200 miles of shoreline there is plenty of space for recreation. Thurmond Lake is also home to many fishing tournaments and several state parks. The Savannah River is home to racing (power boats and rowing regattas) and family recreation along the many trails along the river or on the Riverwalk located in downtown Augusta.

Whether its Golf, Baseball or just listening to the song that nature sings along the Savannah River, we invite you to come and take a look at what our little big town has to offer.
